Crumbling Ghost – 10 Mar 11

Damnably Presents...
Crumbling Ghost
with support from Phantom Plastic, The Ophelian and Stuntnut
Thursday, March 10, 2011
81 Stoke Newington Church Street,
London N16 0UL [map]
8:00pm - 18+

London doom/prog-folk metal behemoths Crumbling Ghost have crafted a Trolltastic melding of English folk music (the old type-not the NU-cheesy hokum) with DOOMY scary BASS and just crazy 'too many notes' twin guitar thin-lizzy style solo's that's pretty weird bu...t gee whiz-it's sure a refreshing sound to these ears. Previous outings have seen them rock out with Stinking Lizaveta, back Damo Suzuki, and perform at the 2010 World International John Peel Day. They celebrate the launch of their new album here so if you like loud and heavy but also odd english folk then this is for you.

Support from the refried remnants of 'Fantaplastic' (who imploded a few years ago and split into a worrying number of bands just as super fame beckoned) play under the pseudonymn Phantom Plastic, The Ophelian occupy a space and mood somewhere between pastoral Psychedelia, folk(lore) and olde worlde Doom, and Stuntnut a new band from ex-members of Dredlunadare playing angular, mathy Post Punk.

Rock Against War! – 17 Feb 11

Damnably Presents...
Rock Against War!
In Aid Of CND
Thursday, February 17, 2011

With Former Utopia, No Cars, Fever Dream, Toshi (Passerines Solo), Catcher Nine

The UK is currently waging two wars.

The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are not to prevent terrorism or to help the people in these countries.

...These wars were instigated for the purposes of oil-extraction and to profit from the manufacture and use/sale of Weapons and equipments used in WAR, paid for by Tax-payers in the UK and US.

...The cost of this is immense.

Taxpayers are funding these wars and we are seeing large cuts in education, Libraries, Social Services and the NHS as a result.

ROCK against WAR says no to WAR, no to TAXES funding murder and profiteering Arms Companies and no to cuts in the very foundations of what makes our nation civilised and worth fighting for in the first place.

CND/Brixton Windmill/Damnably together with hopefully more promoters and protest groups want to highlight these Wars are not necessary. The Cuts are not necessary. Put simply:

No WAR=No CUTs.

smallgang
Sounding something like Johnny Cash fronting Sonic Youth or Smog's Bill Callahan holding his own in front of Dinosaur Jr, anyone who loves exciting and intelligent rock music will find something to love in the repertoire of Smallgang. The band have just recorded their 2nd album and it is being mixed as we speak. Early listens would suggest a HIT!
Slowgun
One of the best bands in London-awesome crazed solo's, pretty indiepop harmonies and killer distorto pop tunes! 6 Music favourites and an upbeat London based distorto pop quartet to get excited about!
MJ Hibbett
Having performed live on Radio One, had a Record Of The Year in Rolling Stone, an Album Of The Day on 6Music, released one of the first ever viral videos, toured up and down the UK and even featured in an Edinburgh Fringe Festival show, and all while maintaining complete independence from record labels, Hibbett is old school indie, belligerently optimistic, and will have a pint.
Former Utopia
Radio 6/Resonance FM featured, genre defying intelligent edgy song smith that producing the kind of mortally sad, black humoured alt. folk that reminiscent of Lambchop, Mountain Goats and on occasion Shellac.
BAANEEX
Make fun, tunesome, rawcore noises; avant garde pop-punk ditties; post-rock dib-dabs and mellow, pensive warbles. Formed on February 12th 2010 the four-piece take in a diverse range of influences and sellotape them together into songs about Dracula, Dracula and swans.

These two legends of post punk will play 2 sets featuring ancient ragtime/blues/folk standards and a selection of old and new material from their extensive back-catalogues.

Support comes from Susie Hug, who previously fronted The Katydids and now continues a successful solo career and recent albums recorded with Travis and Calexico, Simon Kobayashi (smallgang) and Alex Carter (Armchair Songs) as Your New Friend who play incredibly pretty songs with a rare level of skill and complexity, and Former Utopia's mortally sad, black humoured alt. folk reminiscent of Lambchop, Mountain Goats and on occasion Shellac.

Bellini – 24 Oct 10

Damnably Presents...
Bellini
with support from Lazarus Clamp, Slowgun, Dead Days Beyond Help, Former Utopia
Sunday, October 24, 2010
22 Blenheim Gardens,
London, UK SW2 5BZ [map]
4:00pm - 18+

BELLINI
This Steve Albini-approved band is a rhythmic, tight, beautifully aggressive quartet consisting of Agostino Tilotta, his wife Giovanna Cacciola (both also of Italy's famed Uzeda), bassist Matthew Taylor (the Romulans) and drummer Alexis Fleisig (Girls Against Boys). Though retaining some of the basic elements of their former selves, Bellini are more focused, more structured and more rhythmic than ever before. They embody the true spirit of perseverance and punk rock, making uncompromising, honest music strictly for the brutal love of it.

Support comes from underdog band and undiscovered, roughcut gem of British independent music Lazarus Clamp, Slowgun, a 6 Music favourite and London based distorto pop quartet to watch, instrumental Guitar and Drum duo Dead Days Beyond Help, and black humoured alt. folk trio Former Utopia.
